Leo Curbelo graduated from St. John’s University in NYC with a degree in Communications. Studying film under C.K. Bardosh (”Forced March)” he shot his first short, “How To Rip Off Your Local Dominitrix.” After college, he and his brother Jorge Curbelo (”Despierta America”) produced and starred in segments for Univision’s comedy program “Lente Loco.”
Leo went on to work as a graphic artist for various Madison Avenue agencies and as the Graphic Director for the La Tea Theater in lower Manhattan - run by actor Nelson Landrieu (”Random Hearts.”) While at La tea, Leo also worked behind the scenes including producing the play “Inhabitants at the End of Times” starring Mateo Gómez (”Piñero,”) lead actor in “The Garden of Eddie.” During a stint at the ad agency Young & Rubicam, he met fellow graphic artist Eric Merola and together co-created the animated series “Fly Boy.” The animation is included on “Spike & Mike’s Contagious” festival DVD.
Leo studied digital editing at The Edit Center under the tutelage of Alan Oxman (”Welcome tothe Dollhouse”) and Affonso Gonçalves (”The Door in the Floor.”) He’s assisted on films (”The Mudge Boy,”) and documentaries (PBS’ P.O.V.,) and edited television programs (MTV, SpikeTV, Oxygen.) He has also worked on corporate projects for IBM, including on-site assignments with big blue in China, India, Italy, and Monaco.
Leo’s short films have been selected to The HBO New York Latino Film Festival, The Coney Island Film Festival, The International Cinematic Film Festival of Uruguay, & twice won “Best of Film Slam” at the Pioneer Theater, the East Village mecca for independent filmmakers.
